Your Energy Centers – the Chakras

The Chakras

Chakra Basics

In Hindu and tantric/yogic traditions and other belief systems   chakras are energy points or energetic knots in the subtle body. They are located at the physical counterparts of the major plexuses of arteries, veins and nerves. Chakras are part of the subtle body, not the physical body, and as such are the meeting points of the subtle (non-physical) energy channels, called nadis. Nadiis are channels in the subtle body through which the life force (prana), or vital energy moves. Various scriptural texts and teachings present a different number of chakras. There are many chakras in the subtle human body according to the tantric texts, but there are 7 chakras that are considered to be the most important ones.  Chakras -Their name derives from the Sanskrit word for “wheel” or “turning“, but in the yogic context a better translation of the word is ‘vortex or whirlpool’.

Chakra – Who Has Chakras?

Chakras. We all have them, humans, animals, plants. Basically anything that is considered to be a living creature on this planet has chakras, or “energy centers”. Our chakras are the energy centers of our bodies, we have them located from head to toe, as well as the energy that radiates above, below and outside of us, one major “chakra” or energy center is what some call the Aura. It is the energy that surrounds our being, and within that energy our health, emotions, mental state, physical state, as well as our past, present and future happenings, including information that ties us to our ancestors is kept. This energy is what keeps us alive, the energy we have to get out of bed each day, the energy that keeps us breathing, thinking, ticking, and feeling.

How Do Chakras Work?

When we become ill, when we are traumatized, when we are kept in a negative environment, whenever our “being” is faced with a negative energy our chakras, depending on the situation can close itself off. Our Chakras close as a way of protecting us. To have a healthy body, not just physically but as a whole, it is important that your chakras be open, yet protected.  Some people have experienced moments when they have been introduced to someone they’ve never met, that when reaching out for a handshake the other person’s energy is so toxic that they describe to me a feeling of the energy, or chakras actually recoiling, retracting or shrinking back into the body. This is our energetic body talking to us. These are the types of “feelings” we want to be aware of. The last thing we would want to do is co-mingle our energy with another person’s energy if their energy is in fact negative or toxic. Especially for those empaths out there, it’s like inviting a plague into your system with no antibodies to defend itself. Another persons toxic energy can and will make a person ill if they don’t protect themselves from it

As I mentioned, our energy system, particularly the main seven chakras, they often will close themselves off as a protective measure, there are many different reasons this can happen, a few obvious reasons for this may be a major illness, any shock to your physical system, such as any abuse, large doses of medicines, car accidents, emotional abuse, long stays in a hospital, negative work environment, or even sleeping next to a negative partner. Anyone of these reasons can be enough to close down one of your chakras if not all of them depending on the severity of the trauma. This closing of chakras can lead a person to feel depressed, physically sick, confused, weak and even suicidal. I have heard it best explained as “feeling heavy and tired, with no desire to move, or lack of desire to engage in conversation with another person.” That’s pretty serious, and no wonder someone would feel depressed if they felt this way all the time.

How To Heal Our Chakras

So what is the best circumstance for our chakras, so that we can feel joyful, happy, and have energy as well as a feeling of wanting to thrive? Well, we really need to start by taking care of our body. What we do to our bodies makes a difference, what we eat, drink, and consume, such as sugar, caffeine, medications, drugs, or alcohol can have adverse affects on our energy system. I have been asked by several students, “What if I am taking a medication that is prescribed by my doctor?” It depends on what that medication is. Does your body need it to be healthy? To survive? To keep any of your body parts functioning properly, such as your heart, your kidneys, or blood, like diabetes? Even medications that are meant to keep us healthy can still take a toll on other body parts. The bottom line, it is your job to take care of your body. You were given only one body in this lifetime, and what you choose to do with it can have devastating effects later on. Partying for instance, it’s almost a right of passage when you’re in your early twenties, but to much of anything isn’t a good thing. Just remember what you do to your body now, can and will likely affect your body at a later date. So if you have this knowledge, why not treat it with care? Eat the right foods, I’m not saying don’t ever eat cake, but keep the sweets and high sodium treats to a minimum. Recreational drugs are a big no-no if you want your energy centers, your chakras to work properly.

When a Chakra is healthy and happy, it spins in a clockwise motion like a fan, each Chakra spins at a different speed. The higher up the Body, the higher the vibration of the Chakra. The goal of course is to have all of your Chakras spinning at their proper rate of vibration. When a Chakra closes down, or is “wounded” the vibration or rate that it spins will either slow down, meaning your Chakra is closing or closed, likely causing a negative aspect of your life to happen such as depression, lack of interest in your job or a relationship, a loss of sexual desire, a desire to self-medicate, or a desire to drink or over-eating are a few examples. If the Chakra becomes over-stimulated, causing your Chakra to move too fast, you might experience headaches, moodiness, anxiety, fear or paranoia,

Energy, Chakra and Reiki Healing

Energy healing, such as Reiki, or hands on healing can assist the body in balancing these energies. Our body is the vessel that holds our chakras and our spirit, so the better care you take of it the better overall health you will have. Chakras should be cleansed twice a day, at morning and evening before going to sleep. It’s a simple thing really,, we want to imagine our chakras and our entire energetic system being vacuumed free of any dark, negative or stuck energy, when we remove something from our energy system we need to put something back to fill that space or we will be walking around like an open cart at a junk food grocery where anything and everything can be thrown in. So take just five minutes in the morning and five at night, imagine Archangel Michael vacuuming out all of the “yuck” then imagine him filling our energy and body back up with the White Light of the Divine. This light is the Universal Light or Prana, chi (there are many different words for it,)  imagine your entire body being filled then imagine it overflowing out of your crown chakra at the top of your head and allow it to surround your outer body as well. Imagine it forming a protective shell, like an egg or a ball of light completely surrounding you. Then imagine each chakra center, The Root, The Sacral, The Solar Plexus, The Heart, The Throat, The Third Eye and the The Crown (refer to the picture posted at the top of this page) imagine that each chakra has a door, I try to visualize each door matching the same color of the chakra, so you will see a red door, an orange door, a yellow door, a green door, a blue door, a indigo door and a purple door. Imagine that all of the doors are wide open. To protect our energy body it is best if we close these doors before venturing out into the world especially if we will be entering a space that we know there may a lot of people, or a group of people who may not always be in their happy place such as a working environment, a train or subway. This will prevent others from cording you and sucking out your energy. Ever feel like when you step off a crowded airplane or bus you feel anxious and tired, that because those around you are cording your energy, they may likely not even realize it. Do this at night as well. Cleansing the chakras, filling them back up with light, then closing each door.  During the night when we sleep, we are likely unaware of it, but most people astral travel while in their sleep state, so it’s important to make sure you’re grounded and protected before you drift off to Lala land, because even in Lala Land, other spirit energies can tap into your energy.

One of the things that can happen, is when someone has been traumatized, either by abuse, an accident, being witness to a traumatic event, our Spirit energy can actually split off from your physical body so that it can protect itself from being harmed. So if you feel like you have a hard time staying focused, if you ever feel like you’re crawling out of your skin, overly anxious or tired, depressed but can’t really explain why, these are all signs that your energetic body has checked out. Energy Healing is the best way to get your spirit body, physical body, and mental and emotional body all working together again. It may sound complicated but it’s really quite simple. It’s important that if you’re feeling separated from your spirit or emotional body that you call back your Spirit or a Energetic body back into your body. This can be easily done by meditating for ten to fifteen minutes a day, it may not completely resolve itself in a day, it may take days or weeks, but if you are patient and truly aware and are making a real effort everyday to imagine all of your energy that is out in the world coming back to you, and it is all remaining within your energetic body without much discomfort then you’re on your way.

For those that feel like they are not progressing fast enough, or are having difficulty with calling your energy back into your body, it’s recommended that you meditate every day and at the same time each day focusing on your energy returning to you. Imagine your energy as a puppy, a puppy can be sweet and loving but a little hard to manage, what it needs is practice and consistency, and before you know it – it’s sitting when you ask it to sit, and it’s returning to you when you call out its name.  So you are going to want to do a similar “training” with your energetic body,  call on your energy to come back, ask your spirit body to please return and re-enter back into your body.

If you feel that you are not really getting anywhere by yourself or you feel that you don’t have an understanding of what you need to do, or you don’t feel comfortable doing this on your own, I highly recommend getting a healing session with an experienced Energy Healer or Practitioner, they should be able to assist you and help you get a feel for it and how to understand what it means to take care of your chakras and energy body.

Healing sessions can really be an amazing experience, not only can an experienced practitioner help heal and balance your chakra centers but they can teach you how to prevent future blocks and illness, how to remove unwanted blocks, and of course, heal what ever wounds we carry deep in our soul and help remove scarring. Scarring of our aura or chakras, which is in itself created to protect us from trauma, can make the healing process a bit more difficult. But it can be done. There is a renewed sense of self and an incredible feeling of self love that can come from removing and healing unwanted blocks in our energy centers.  Our past wounds (relationships gone wrong, breakups, lack of trust, etc) create blocks preventing us from moving forward in our lives, prevent us from growing emotionally, spiritually and mentally. Sometimes those scars need to be softened, some need to just be torn off so that we can heal it from the correct perspective.

I don’t want to forget about two other important chakras which are located in our hands and in our feet,  I will touch on these towards the end.

1st Chakra ~ (Base or Root Chakra)
The color for the root Chakra is red and it is grounded with your power. The base Chakra is located at the base of the spine. When the root Chakra is open, you feel in good health and connected with your physical body. It is used to ground your essence into your physical body. This Chakra gives you determination, grounds you and aids in survival in the physical realms. When the root Chakra is balanced, masculine and feminine energy work together to make you strong and vital. When it is not balanced, the feminine aspects disappear and you can become overbearing and have difficulty with the ego. Physically, it governs the kidneys and the spinal column.

The 2nd Chakra

The Sacral Chakra

2nd Chakra ~ (Sacral, Spleen or Sexual Chakra)

The color for this Chakra is orange. It is used for creativity, vitality and sexual expression and creates the balance between connectedness with other people and time spent alone. The spleen Chakra is located in the sexual organs– ovaries in women and testes in men.  When the masculine and feminine energy is balanced in this Chakra, adaptability and flexibility come easily. This Chakra is connected to procreation and bringing in new life.    When it is out of balance, it causes one to fear death. Physically, it governs sex and reproduction along with creativity, intimacy, flow of body fluids and energy.

The 3rd Chakra

The Solar Plexus Chakra

3rd Chakra ~ (Solar Plexus Chakra)

The color for this Chakra is yellow. Yellow is very good for getting in touch with your power and to build confidence. It is your center of will. This Chakra deals with the human ego, emotions, and self-love. The solar plexus Chakra is located near the stomach. The primary urge of this Chakra is free will. Love essentially comes from the heart Chakra, but the spark is often ignited in the Solar Plexus Chakra. This Chakra gives you strength and provides the ability to hold energy for personal power and emotional control. When it is unbalanced, it produces rage and destructive anger. Physically, it governs the pancreas, liver, spleen, stomach, gall bladder, and the nervous system.

The 4th Chakra

The Heart Chakra

4th Chakra ~ (Heart Chakra)

The color for this Chakra is green. This Chakra deals with physical healing, balance, harmony, compassion, and love. The heart Chakra is located near the heart. The heart Chakra is most important in all facets of love. When it is balanced, you trust in others, take risks, love and feel loved. Physically, it governs the thymus gland, heart, blood, circulatory system and the immune and endocrine systems.

The 5th Chakra is known as the Heart Chakra

The Throat Chakra

5th Chakra ~ (Throat Chakra)

The color for this Chakra is blue. This Chakra deals with communication and expression. The throat Chakra is located near the thyroid gland. Opening this Chakra allows you to speak the truth and to express your true feelings with love. From here, you begin to know divine love and your personal power is strengthened with divine knowledge and wisdom. Physically, it governs the thyroid gland, lungs, vocal cords, bronchial apparatus and metabolism.

The 6th Chakra

6th Chakra ~ (Third Eye Chakra)

The color for the 6th Chakra is indigo, a combination of red and blue. This Chakra deals with clairvoyance and mental activity. The third eye Chakra is located in the center of the forehead. When this Chakra is open, you experience spiritual wisdom and enlightenment. It is the center of physical and spiritual understanding. Physically, it governs the pituitary gland, lower brain, nervous system, ears, nose and the left eye – the eye of personality.

The 7th Chakra

7th Chakra ~(Crown or Christ Consciousness Chakra)

The color for this Chakra is a mixture of Silver, Gold and White and Violet. It is the combination of All that Is and the Divine Connection. The crown Chakra is located at the top of the head. The silver is the feminine energy of creation, the gold is the masculine energy of creation, and the white/violet light is truth and clarity which give clear vision of the truth and protection. When this Chakra is open, you connect with the Creator/The Divine and the source of the White Light comes into your energy field. Physically, it governs the pineal gland, the upper brain and the right eye. Amethyst crystals are helpful in activating this Chakra.

The “forgotten Chakras”. There are two other areas of our bodies that are sometimes forgotten, they have major chakra points, and are just as important as any other chakra center in our body. Lets start with our hands…the main chakras there are located in the palms of both hands, depending if you are right or left handed depends on their use. Most of us use our right hand to flow healing energy out to the area which needs to be healed, our left handed chakra pulls in the energy as our right hand sends it out.

Hand Chakra

Hand Chakras

The Hand Chakras

The beautiful thing about the hand chakras that I appreciate is that most healing modalities require the hand chakras to be used as a way of pulling in energy, and as way of releasing or directing the energy. As a Reiki Master, I channel Universal energy, Prana, Chi, Qi energy through my hands. Reiki healers channel this energy, using the hands to absorb the energy and then the energy is channeled through the body back out through the palms of our hands. Some may also channel and pull the energy in through their crown chakra, but when one is attuned to Reiki Healing Energy, the ancient healing symbols are programmed into the palms of the hands, the hands are used as the healing tool if you will.

It’s also important to note that there are many minor chakras that are also located on the outer, lower half of the human body. There are several chakras that sit above the head, there is one important chakra that is located on the outside above our head, about an inch above the crown (the color is white/clear/gold) this chakra is rarely discussed because many believe that it correlates directly to our Creator, giving it more of a religious weight. Some people just are not comfortable mixing their “God” with their ability to heal. I believe that we all are part of God’s energy, this is what gives us the ability to heal using our energy chakras. My understanding of God’s energy is that it is one and the same, it is called the Universal Life Force Energy, the Universal Energy, Prana, Chi, Qi, The Energy of The All That Is. Call it what you want, what you name it makes no difference, the energy and it’s ability to heal, keep our bodies moving, thinking, loving and feeling is all part of the same energy.

Foot Chakras

Foot Chakras

The Foot Chakras

One of the other forgotten Chakra’s is the Foot Chakra. There are Chakras located in the feet, the middle of the foot, and on the sole of the foot. It’s important to point out this Chakra, because of all of the nerve endings are located in the bottom of the foot area. Most people have heard of the term Reflexology. Well, Reflexology is typically done on the foot because of the location of the energy centers in the foot, it is also done on the palms of the hands. Both the feet and hands have nerve points that connect to other parts of the body. There are areas on the hand near the thumb that when pressed have been known to cure headaches, while areas on the feet, when pressed, such as the inner line of the foot can help in alleviating back pain.

I feel that we can use our Creator’s energy to make our own energy, healing or otherwise, stronger!
